The VonHeltzen
Home Ethanol Still
Why a VonHeltzen Still?
The Vonheltzen Still
is designed specifically for the individual to be able to make
their own ethanol fuel in their own home garage or similar space.
The 25 gallon set-up is light and compact enough to be moved from
place to place (when not full of mash). The VonHeltzen pot and
dome are made of stainless steel, the kind that will not rust and
is very, very hard. It is meant to last a lifetime. The pot has
a three-ply bottom with aluminum sandwiched between two layers
of stainless steel. This distributes the heat quickly across the
bottom of the pot, making it very efficient. Inside the condenser
is a fluted copper pipe to provide a large amount of surface space.
Copper is used because of its superior ability to transfer heat.
This adds even more to the Still's efficiency. The condenser is
a water bath type which uses a small pump to pump water through
the condenser ensuring all the steam is cooled into liquid. The
column is a reflux tube filled with a variety of elements made
of copper, again used because of its superior ability to transfer
heat. As it comes in contact with the copper elements, the steam
releases heat and heats the copper elements. The water vapor is
the first to condense, so it falls while the ethanol rises. Any
ethanol vapor that might turn back into liquid is turned to steam
again by the copper elements before it falls back into the pot.
This makes the distillation process very efficient and produces
a high proof for the final ethanol product. |

Reflux Tube
If you have access to everything else you need to make ethanol but
want a good reflux tube to improve or finish a still that you already
have, then this is for you.
This tube is filled with various copper elements that force some of
the water vapor to fall back into the fluid in the pot. A thermometer
is attached to the top of the tube to monitor the temperature of the
vapor as it leaves the tube and enters the condenser. The condenser
has a fluted copper tube inside the stainless steel outer pipe. Water
is pumped through the outer pipe bathing the copper tube in cool water,
turning the vapor from the column into liquid.
