What is a Molecular Sieve?

A Molecular Sieve is an amazing addtion to any ethanol making enterprise, one that virtually everyone who makes ethanol will want to have. A Molecular Sieve is a material containing very tiny pores that absorb gases and liquids. Our Molecular Sieve can absorb approximately 25% of its own weight in water, but it can't absorb the ethanol becasue the ethanol molecule is too big. When the Molecular Sieve is put in the liquid, which has been distilled in your VonHeltzen Still, it will absorb the water left in the final product. Molecular Sieves used for making ethanol can yield virtually water-free products. This allows the production of a very high proof (high percentage) of ethanol. And another great thing about our Molecular Sieve is that it is reusable! Simply heat it to evaporate the water quickly, or let it sit out until the water evaporates, and then use it again.

Some people use zeolite (like scoopable kitty litter) which will absorb water, but it ends up in a sludgy mess, and when dried out it ends up in a hard cake which you then have to break up into small pieces. Our molecular sieve is much cleaner and easier to use. It always maintains its pellet shape, is made of a food grade material, and can be easily reused almost indefinitely.

So how much should you order? Remember, the sieve can absorb 25% of its weight in water. You must decide how much water you are going to absorb out of the liquid you collected from the condenser. A gallon of water weighs about eight pounds. If you want to remove a gallon of water in one pass, you will need 32 pounds of sieve. With that in mind, there is no point in buying only a pound of sieve material, although we will sell it that way if you want, so we are selling it in various quantities. The larger the quantity the better the value.
